We thought it was a good idea to set up a blog to keep you all up to date with baby James's CDH journey. Currently tucked up in Mummy's ever growing tummy he is safe and warm and thanks you for coming and saying hello. There are plenty of appointments organized in the coming months so to keep you all up to date I shall update this site. Feel free to come and visit to check where little one 'is at'! What is a diaphragmatic hernia?

The diaphragm is a curved muscle that separates the contents of the chest from the abdomen (tummy). Diaphragmatic hernias occur when the diaphragm does not form completely, leaving a hole. The hole can be on either side, but in most children it is on the left side. This allows part of the intestine (gut) to develop in the chest, which can squash the lungs and can stop them developing properly before birth.

We do not know exactly what causes diaphragmatic hernias. It is not due to anything that happens during pregnancy. They are very rare, occurring in between one in 2,500 and one in 5,000 pregnancies. They are more common in boys than girls. Diaphragmatic hernias can be associated with other problems, so the doctors will examine your child closely to check if this is the case.
